Kathryn Williams

Kathryn Williams is a versatile flute soloist, orchestral player, and researcher. Her work focuses on making tangible connections between her instrument and body, interrogating ideas of accessibility and physical limitation through projects such as Coming Up for Air, which has commissioned over 100 pieces limited to a single breath. Coming Up for Air was released on a “strangely fascinating” (BBC Music Magazine) album by Huddersfield Contemporary Records in 2019. Performances include Bendigo International Festival of Exploratory Music (Australia), Constellation (Chicago), Deep Minimalism 2.0, Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, and Kettle’s Yard. The project has also been featured on BBC Radio 3 The Listening Service and The Sound Barrier on PBS Melbourne.

Kathryn’s recording credits include a binaural recording of Aldo Clementi’s Ouverture for 12 flutes on All That Dust, music of Ryoko Akama and John Cage on Another Timbre, and with Oliver Coates on RVNG International. She is a member of experimental ensemble House of Bedlam, whose latest album Enclosure was released by NMC.

An experienced educationalist, Kathryn has worked with composers and performers from Britten-Pears Young Artist Programme, Chetham’s School of Music, Dartington Music Summer School, and National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. Kathryn studied at the Royal Northern College of Music and recently completed her PhD at Huddersfield University.
