Bofan Ma
Bofan Ma is an intermedia composer-researcher based in Manchester and North West England. Originally from China, he makes music that embodies an active search for the transnational self in the age of Big Data and Artificial Intelligence. He is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the Royal Northern College of Music and the RNCM Centre for Practice & Research in Science & Music (PRiSM), working in the fields of interdisciplinary collaboration, artistic research, and the intersections between music, science, and technology. In particular, he is interested in the creative agency and ethics of novel machine learning technologies, as well as the dynamic artist-technologist working relationships over software development, data curation, and iterative testing and refinement processes.
Bofan has created music for the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE), Shanghai Conservatory Chinese Symphony Orchestra, London Sinfonietta, Distractfold, Psappha, Ensemble X.y, Vonnegut Collective, to name a few. He is the Chair of the Manchester branch of the international Contemporary Music for All (CoMA) network, and one of the ‘In Motion’ artists supported by Sound and Music UK in 2025-26.
